2026.07.13 polaris migration
2026.07.13 polaris migration:
A few years ago I was forced to shut down my personal home email server because of all the new verifications
and blacklisting occurring (world-wide) in an effort to block spam. It had been growing steadily more difficult
to keep my mails server off the blacklists, and I just finally gave up and went looking for a host. I found
Rackspace, they were reasonable and had the features I needed so I migrated over.
But in 2026, Rackspace undertook measures to raise their margins, one of which included "dumping the low-margin
customers", which unfortunately included the cheap, low-volume email hosting I was using. My bill increased
from $10 to $12 a month in Jan 2026, which was entirely reasonable. But then only a few months later they
announced a 200-400% price increase for their low-tier services. My monthly bill jumped from $12/mo to $36/mo,
which was more than I was willing to accept. ($144/year to $432/yr) I gave them a call to see if there were
any other options. The two reps I spoke with were both keenly aware of the impact the price hikes were having,
producing long hold times on customer service lines that were being inundated with users calling to complain or
to cancel services. "If your plan was to get rid of your small customers, the price hike is doing a great job!"
So I again went looking for an alternative, and found PolarisMail. I wasn't looking forward to the migration
though and so I procrastinated the migration all the way to July, when I finally moved over.
