Icom ID-5100A Icom ID-5100A:

I got this radio based on a recommendation when I was looking for a new (rather than used) dual band radio
for the truck. I was initially happy with it, though I later found the lack of color in the display and the lack-
luster touch sensitivity (it's a resistive touch screen) were a bit of a disappointment.

Several years later the touch got less and less responsive, eventually rendering it useless. It turns out that
Icom used a touch panel that was vulnerable to UV damage. IN A MOBILE RADIO. (idiots...) So I found someone
on eBay selling replacement touch panels and I replaced mine. It's working fine now, but it won't last unless
I get manic about taking the faceplate off the dash when I park, which is also annoying.

I recently took the 5100 out of my Escape and replaced it with a Yaesu FTM-400XDR. (it has a responsive color
touch screen with much better menus) I've currently got a hamfest-special in the Escape that I'll be replacing
with the 5100 when I get a chance. Since I don't use that truck often, I won't have to deal with removing the
faceplate all the time. It can just spend most of its time safe in the glovebox.
