back to 2023.11.11 George Wyth Park Foxhunt
0 Preparation
0 Preparation:
The club has been doing small fox-hunts with the local Boy Scouts up at Camp Ingawanis every year or so, but
we haven't done a "public" hunt in quite awhile. We'd like to use this event as a "getting back in the swing
of things" exercise. We didn't give a lot of notice, so we're not sure how many players will show up, but it
will at least be a good practice for getting more formal hunts going later. I think the plan is to try to do
several fox-hunts every year.
I'm currently the only one with any fox boxes (and a bunch of radios and tape measure beams for the scouts to
use) but recently several other members have expressed increased interest and are gathering materials like
offset attenuators and getting their own tape-measure-beams assembled. We're hoping these events spark more
interest in radio, providing a refreshing new angle and adding a little bit of competition and innovation into
the hobby.
We've settled on George Wyth State Park on Saturday November 11 (Labor Day) from noon to about 4pm. Players
should meet at the lot on the North end of the park right by the park ranger's office around 11:30am. It's
the first right as you turn off the highway into the park, and should be marked with our new feather flags.
Two test beacons will be set up for calibration of your equipment, and four fox boxes will be hidden and
waiting for the signal to start transmitting. See the accompanying documentation for fox frequencies and
durations. The times are set for increasing difficulty, but if they prove too fast to find, we will try to
hide them again with more challenging times.
The park is about a mile East-West and half a mile North-South. You should expect to have to do some very
short driving to get into the area, and then will need to do some walking in the woods to find the foxes.
Rangers have notified us there may be bow hunters looking for deer in the deep woods, so wear visible clothing
and don't wander so far into the woods that you can't see the tree-line.
Players should expect all the fox boxes to be well-hidden, so make sure you have a way to knock down the signal
when you get close, because you WILL NOT be able to just get close and then visually spot the fox. If you have
a "sniffer", be sure and bring it. A map of the park, ruler/pen, and compass may be helpful for bearings.
Water in the park is shut off for the winter, but there are latrines open in the park. The park is also close to
downtown Cedar Falls with McDonalds and other stores and restaurants for your convenience. Check the weather
before you head out, dress accordingly.
Talk-in will be on 146.94/34 (136.5 tone)
