SB series (50,120,175,350):
The SB50 housings are also available in a variety of colors, but each color has its own keying, and you cannot
plug one color into another. (I use the colors for purpose coding and need them to be compatible, so I use a
Dremel to grind away the keying) There's a variety of contacts available for different wire gauges, ranging
from 8 gauge down to about 2 gauge. The only difference there is the size of the opening on the contact, all
of them have the same ratings. They can be crimped or soldered, although most manufactured products that use
them will go with crimping for increased reliability. I personally prefer to solder so that I can recycle and
reuse them as needed, such as when modifying a wiring harness.
There are several brands making compatible contacts, including SMG and GEN. SMG brand SB50's can be bought
from most automotive stores, as they are used to power external light racks, snow plow blade lights, and even
winches. They're also used to quick-connect batteries in some vehicles. GEN are available at a fraction of
the cost of Anderson on Amazon, although they are lower quality. I've encountered a couple that had loose
contact springs, but even throwing those away I was still quite ahead on cost, as the general fit of the
housings and contact quality were still good.
SB50 is just one size available. SB120, SB175, and SB350 are larger variations on the same design, and each
uses its own size contacts.
SB50 - 120 amps - 6 to 12 gauge
SB120 - 240 amps - 1 to 6 gauge
SB175 - 280 amps - 1 to 6 gauge
SB350 - 500 amps - 6/0 to 1/0 gauge
