back to power

buck and boost buck and boost:

Here is where I keep documentation on the buck, boost, and combination buck/boost power supplies I've bought
in the past. They work a bit like transformers, trading amps and volts, but work with a DC input and output.

They all have a rated input and output voltage range, as well as a maximum current and power. Since most don't
say if the current/power limits are on the input or the output side, I'm going to err on the side of caution
and consider the power limit to be on the input side and current limit to be on the input for boost and output
for buck, since that's the side that will have the higher power/current.

A few of theses converters are dual-purpose, and will automatically switch between buck and boost, depending
on the input voltage provided and what the output voltage is set to.

Some of these converters also have an adjustable maximum output current. None of them can run at their max
ratings continuously. It's probably a good idea to keep maximum current/power at 50% of their rated values.

They also generate heat, and care should be taken when installing them into enclosures. Hot glue is not
recommended for securing them since they may get warm enough to soften or melt the glue.
