4 stations
4 stations:
I was busy setting up the staging canopy while most of the work was done setting up the other stations around
me so I didn't get a good look at what was going on. Stations were set up around the staging canopy in a bit
of a semi-circle, with each station having its own fold-out table, chairs, radio equipment, and antenna. Instead
of setting up a canopy, Harold (N4HRL) just opened his tail-gait and extended it out with a tarp, a convenient
arrangement that he's used frequently.
Mark (N8TWO) recently acquired a tent from Curt (NK0T) and opted to set that up by the horse circle, where we
set up his selectable vertical inside the ring. This gave him the best protection from what was looking to be a
fairly high risk of wind and driving rain for the event. (and as it turns out, it worked well to keep out the
mosquitoes during overnight operations) I was surprised to see the tent had a dedicated hatch for cables.
Doug (K0DV), Dave (KD0DK), and Curt (NK0T) ran CW (on 20m I think?) for a good portion of Saturday. We
had to ask Dick to turn off power to the electric fence though as it was giving the CW rig's AGC a fit as it fired.
There were a few hams that showed up just for Saturday, one of them setting up in a canopy to the North, and
then packed up that evening. We didn't have much of an "operators schedule" this year, and by dark it was just
me and Mark (N8TWO) that remained. He left around 10pm, and I intended to just operate maybe a little longer
and then get some rest in my truck. As it turns out, 40m voice was roaring alive all night long, and I made
many contacts throughout the evening. Before I knew it, it was dawn, and I just decided to power through it
until someone showed up to relieve me.
Randy (KF0JPR) arrived (with donuts!) at about 6:30 am and I was finally able to get some light sleep. Sometime
after that, Mark (N8TWO) arrived to get the digital station running, and made quite a few contacts as well. I
finally got back up and made a handful of additional contacts on the 40m that somehow was still running wild,
but those were the only two stations active on Sunday.
Although there wasn't much in the way of radio on Sunday, I was very grateful for the arrival of a large group
to help with tear-down. The sun had come out, and with very little in the way of clouds in the sky, it had gotten
pretty hot and I was struggling to pack up. There's no way I would have been able to get my truck loaded back
up in that heat without all the help I got, so much thanks go out to all that assisted with tear-down!
