You: a seller has me on a mailing list sending to my ebay email address You: at the bottom of the email it has an Unsubscribe link that goes to a "sorry that's a bad address" link. probably whoever is sending their mailing list out has an unsubscribe system You: they either are out of date on the address or are deliberately not including it right You: there's also a phone number to call for help. but when I call it just says contact us through ebay hand hangs up You: I'd like to send you a small screen shot of the bottom of the email 8:34 am has joined the conversation eBay Assistant: Upon reading your query, I understand that you are contacting us regarding communication you wish to stop receiving from a seller. My name is Clyde, and I'll be assisting you today. Please allow me a moment to catch up on your conversation so far. You: ok eBay Assistant: Hi Nathanael! Hope you're doing great aside from your concern. You: so far so good eBay Assistant: I captured here that you needed assistance in having a seller remove you on their mailing list as it seems like a spam etc correct? You: yes, and I think it would benefit your other users if someone talked with them about having a functional unsubscrie and contact You: nobody likes to be stuck on a mailing list they can't get off from You: when I called their contact phone numebr it just said to contact them on ebay. so what's the point of having the number? eBay Assistant: I hear you and I really appreciate the detailed summary. eBay Assistant: I do definitely see and recognize how this can be a nuisance, I am here tohelp. eBay Assistant: That being said, can you let me know how long has this been going on for? You: give me a minute to take a look and see what sort of history I have on it eBay Assistant: Thanks! If you could also grab the sender email that would be lovely. You: my trash doesn't go back very far, but it looks like I've been getting one of these about once a week You: probably been getting one a week since I ordered from them in april You: there's a good chance I did select to subscribe to their mailing list list during the order, but I really don't expect to get email that frequently on such a thing You: I am on several other sellers' mailing lists, and once a month is pretty typical for a newsletter eBay Assistant: Thanks for all these information. And yes, subscribing can be quite a reflex at this point. I do be like that too. eBay Assistant: Any chance you got the handler email from these newsletter? You: in the past when a mailing list was sending me too frequently, when I click to unsubscribe, they take me to a page that gives me an option to "not send so often", and if they had that I'd probably select it. but their unsubscribe is completely broken You: handler? You: I can send you a copy of the email or a full screen print if you need it You: or do you want the "from" ? eBay Assistant: I meant the email address of the sender of the newsletter. The "from" to be exact. You: well "FROM" header can be anythiing the sender wants (easily forged/changed) but this says You: APMEX on eBay You: it was sent to v1ebay@vftp.net eBay Assistant: Appreciated! That seems to really be the issue here- the sellers news letter hyperlinks is broken and making it so that it does not really direct you to the intended pages. You: that is an alias I made for you, you're the only one that has it, I do not give that address to anyone else directly or on any other platform. so they got that from you You: also if I try to call the number at the bottom of the newsletter it plays a recording sayin to contact them on ebay eBay Assistant: Of course, thank you for your trust. We make sure that no one else has information from aside from the ones you are willing to provide in public. eBay Assistant: Can you spare a minute or two as I check on what options we can do on this? You: sure eBay Assistant: Thank you. You: header spf=pass smtp.mailfrom=ebounce.apmex.com; You: so it was sent directly from them, not you eBay Assistant: Got that, I am currently looking into your account to see if there is a different way to manually unsubscribe aside from the link the seller sends. eBay Assistant: Thanks for patiently waiting! eBay Assistant: Okay so I was able to confirm a few details here and there. From what it looks like- you've already actually removed them from your saved sellers list. Additionally, I was able to pinpoint the exact problem as well regarding the links on the newsletter. You: great! You: yes I removed them from saved sellers You: I was hoping that would remove me from the list but it kept coming eBay Assistant: The thing here is that the newsletter of the seller or rather the email they are sending out has broken links, they have also automated it to be sent out to previous subscribers! These makes it so that even if you removed them from your saved or unsubscribe manually- it still gets sent to you. eBay Assistant: Now I can suggest a work around as we let the seller know about this. Sounds good? You: yes eBay Assistant: Great! eBay Assistant: What you can do right now is tag that newsletter as spam or go ahead and block the email directly. This won't hinder your ability to purchase from them et. this will just stop the broken newsletter from showing up. eBay Assistant: Additionally- we'll reinforce strict guidance to have sellers take accountability on their newsletters. You: normally if someone started spamming me I'd just delete the alias they were emailing to, but that's my ebay alias so I'd lose everything you're sending too eBay Assistant: I recognize that, no worries- just blocking the email itself or tagging it spam will stop that specific newsletter. You: if there's only going to be one or two more before they fix their newsletter I can just ignore it eBay Assistant: Uh huh, I really like how considerate you are and understanding. You: in the three decades I've had this email address I've never actually had to block anyone before eBay Assistant: There's always a first for everything haha. You: though I have had to delete a few aliases heh.... ford and newegg have a habit of getting hacked and then I get fake rolex and phishing emails :P eBay Assistant: That's actually a good practice- as an IT Personnel even before my work on eBay- those are what I recommend doing. eBay Assistant: Quick fixes. You: I know so many people that have had to change their email address, sometimes several times, because they are careless with who they give it to or where they post it, and find themselves getting 20-30 spam/phish a day, it's crazy eBay Assistant: Facts! You know, there's something I do to personally know where a spam is coming from at times. You: I see maybe 5 spam a year, and I've got a pretty large footprint on the internet eBay Assistant: The name or the email I use always includes what the site is or what interaction I did so if I received a spam or email- I will know where it came from. You: yep. same for me, my aliases start with "v1" and then the name of the vendor. hence my v1ebay@vftp.net You: and I own the domain name so there's no limit on my names eBay Assistant: Same! Always cool to see fellow techy people! eBay Assistant: Glad we got this resolved. Are you cool and okay with the next steps? You: makes it easy to see who either got hacked or sold my name to a spammer. and if they can't fix it on their end I just delete the alias and that unplugs them from my inbox. I can make them a new alias if they want to try again eBay Assistant: Amen to that. eBay Assistant: People should really consider doing it like this too. eBay Assistant: Saves a lot of trouble in the future. You: as long as someone has a word with them about fixing their distribution list, and fixing the unsubscribe link, that's all I needed. I'd be nice to see them either answer their phone or remove it from the newsletter too eBay Assistant: Got that, we'll be sure to let our sellers know. For now the recommendation stays the same. We'll take it from here on our end. You: thanks for the assistance eBay Assistant: I appreciate you Nathanael. eBay Assistant: If there's anything you'd like me to clarify on, call it out and I'll make sure you're feeling fully set before you go. You: nope I think I'm all good eBay Assistant: Thank you for being a valued part of the eBay community. Your trust means everything to us, and weÕre committed to making every experience better than the last. If you ever need support, weÕll be right hereÑready to help.
