Now these are just plain magic. Most have three connectors ("ports"), and you plug in your transmitter to
port #1, your antenna into port #2, and a dummy load into port #3. (large enough to continuously load the
transmitter) The idea is that any power "reflected" from the antena will "circulate over" to the dummy loa and
be dissipated. So no matter what happens to your antenna, your transmitter is always seeing a healthy 50 ohms.
This incorporates a large magnet, although it's challenging to find anyone that can describe how it works.
