Field Strength meter on eBay:


I figured it was probably a scam, but decided at least I'd come away with some useful stuff even if it was
useless. (good box / meter / antenna / control, perfectly suited for an ACTUAL field strength project)

I think I paid $30 for it. I was not disappointed - maybe even a little amused. But it DOES work... I think
the electrolytic basically does the work of a diode? I haven't made any attempt to improve it. Looking a
little closer, I think there may be a diode embedded in the blob below the antenna?

Ironically, it's a pretty ideal enclosure for a portable sniffer - you get a very sturdy box, SMA on top
(antenna included!), a (10k?) control pot WITH switch, and a mounted meter. (I don't enjoy cutting holes and
mounting meters in boxes, and you can reuse the pot hole in the front if you like) So if it were a little
cheaper I might recommend getting it just to "gut" and install your chosen FSM circuit. Those parts alone
would cost you $30 if bought individually, and then you'd have to drill holes and assemble it.
