¥ÊTo turn on the transmitter, just plug in the antenna and THEN plug in the battery. The transmitter will start transmitting immediately. (there is no power switch) ¥ÊYou can place the transmitter on any channel by adjusting the channel dial, but it's probably best to leave it on channel 1. ¥ÊTo force the HT to transmit (to check SWR or range), flip the left switch up to the TRANSMIT NOW position. ¥ÊTransmit and wait times can be changed for each hunt by adjusting the dials. (times are approximate, and will be affected by temperature and battery charge) Remember, the longer the transmit time or the less the wait time, the less time the battery will last. ¥ÊAvoid laying the antenna on the ground or against metal objects, that will produce high SWR and make the HT squeel. ¥ÊTo change the recorded message, do these steps IN THIS ORDER: (1) attach the antenna (2) attach the battery (3) flip the right switch to RECORD (4) flip the left switch to TX NOW (5) key down the mic, and speak loudly and clearly your message (6) keep the mic keyed down for at least 20 seconds to fully replace the old message (7) release the mic (8) flip the left switch to HIDE (9) flip the right switch to PLAY (10) flip the left switch to TX NOW to make the transmitter transmit, to hear the message (11) flip the left switch to HIDE Hiding suggestions: ¥ÊNot everyone has a handheld radio, so it would be a good idea to hide the HT withing 50 feet of a road accessable by normal cars. ¥ÊTry to place the antenna in such a way that it gets out well and has a low SWR.\ ¥ If the antenna has a high SWR, the transmitter will let you know by chirping very loudly during transmit. ¥ÊFeel free to hide it as well as you can. Camofage the transmitter and battery, bury them, cover them up, etc. Use any antenna that will get out and have a low SWR. (be creative) ¥ÊHide the HT somewhere that people not in the game will not be able to spot it. ¥ Also avoid letting anyone see you when you hide it. If someone spots you while you are hiding a small package somewhere, they can either call the police and get them thinking its a bomb, or go steal it after you leave. ¥ÊIf you are using an improvised antenna, it would be best to use a SWR meter to test for for high standing wave. ¥ÊTry to place the antenna vertically or nearly vertical if possible. A horizontal antenna may have a good SWR, but will not get out very well. ¥ÊIf the battery runs low, it will start speaking in tongues. You can take it back to Chip or someone else with a battery charger to recharge it and replace it to resume the game. Expect the battery to last about five days if transmitting for 10 seconds every two minutes.
