setting up the Baofeng UV-3R as a fox:
physical prep:
- remove protective film from display
- replace screw holding belt clip dummy with smaller flush screw if available
settings prep:
- if a channel number is displaying in the upper left, hold (u/v) to switch to vfo mode
- press (u/v) briefly to select the lower (vhf) register if necessary
- press (menu) briefly to enter menu
- turn (dial) to menu #3 / SQL
- press (u/v) briefly to change
- turn (dial) to change value to "1" to turn the squelch all the way down
- press (u/v) briefly to return to menu select
- repeat process to change menu #4 / LIGHT to "off" to turn off the display backlight
- repeat process to change menu #5 / BEEP to "off" to turn off the menu beeper (optional)
- repeat process to change menu #7 / POWER to "low" to turn rf power to low (optional)
- repeat process to change menu #12 / STE to "off" to turn off tail tone elimination
- repeat process to change menu #14 / SAVE to "off" to turn off energy saver
- repeat process to change menu #15 / TOT to "180s" to change transmit timeout to 180 seconds
- press Menu to exit menu and return to VFO
- press (vol) briefly to enter volume-change mode.  a volume indicator bar will appear on the bottom
- turn (dial) to the smallest volume before turning it off
- press (vol) briefly to exit volume-change mode
fox channels:
1: 146.565 (oelwein fox 1, MF15 beacon)
2: 146.590 (oelwein fox 2)
3: 146.430 (waterloo fox 3, VX-2)
4: 144.100 (waterloo fox 4, UV-3R)
5: 144.525 (waterloo fox 5, UV-3R)
6: 144.820 (waterloo fox 6, UV-3R)
99: 146.520 (simplex)
fox channel prep:
- if a memory channel number is displayed in small digits in the upper left, you are in memory mode, otherwise you are in vfo mode
- hold (u/v) to switch between vfo and memory mode
- press (u/v) briefly to change selection to band (VHF is lower) if needed
- as needed, set menu #9 / STEP to 25.0khz to change frequency quickly.   set to 5khz to fine tune
- dial in a frequency
- press (f/a) briefly (on the left side of the radio) to enter function mode.  "F" will appear in the upper left
- press (u/v) briefly to enter channel select mode
- rotate (dial) to select channel
- press (u/v) briefly to save frequency to memory
- repeat process for all fox frequencies
final prep:
- only the top register can be used for memory, the lower register is always for vfo.  dial the lower register to simplex (146.520) and leave it there
- select the upper register and dial in the correct fox frequency by channel number
- select the lower register and change its frequency to match the upper register.  this prevents other channels from interfering (the lower register cannot be disabled)
- when done programming, hold (menu) to lock the buttons
if setting up a new used baofeng:
- verify wide band ("W" on display)
