6 scouts hunting
6 scouts hunting:
Once they've got some practice in, we hand them over to their leader to get started hunting their first fox.
The leaders don't know where the foxes are either, so everyone has to play smart and use good orienteering
techniques to quickly find the foxes. (we have four set out around the camp)
In years past we've hid them a ways from camp, down the hills, and this makes it more difficult for everyone,
so this year we're trying to keep the foxes up on higher terrain. All groups were able to find all four of
the foxes within the allotted time. (in years past, it was common to only find 2 of the 4 foxes)
We usually end the day with a "lost scout" exercise, where a scout takes a fox box and hides somewhere in
camp. The rest of the scouts all set out to find the lost scout by tracking the fox radio. This year we
changed it up a little and sent out two separate leaders to be "people in distress". The scouts broke up
into two groups to find them, and to "report back their location and condition" by radio. After having honed
their fox-hunting skills, both groups were able to find both "victims" in pretty short order.
