Cedar Valley Hounds "Boy Scouts Orienteering" 2 meter fox box frequencies

Two low power beacons will be placed at the edge of the starting location prior to the start of the game
for training new players and calibrating receivers

Radio Shack HTX-202 radios will be passed out to several members of each group, with fox frequencies programmed
in and ready to go. Change the radio to the correct channel to start receiving the fox. Use the provided
"tape measure beam" to point around while a fox is transmitting, and observe how the signal changes on the radio.
You'll have to work fast to figure out the best direction to point the antenna before the fox stops transmitting.

The short "film canister" test beacon is on channel 2 and will transmit for about 20 seconds every 30 seconds.
It should be very quick and easy to find by simply walking toward it while it transmits.

The tall test beacon is on channel 1 and transmits for 30 seconds every 90 seconds. With the longer time between
transmissions, it will be quicker to find by getting at least two bearings to judge direction AND distance away
from the fox. Practice this, because you'll need to use your bearing skills when hunting for the "real" foxes.

After you start getting close, you'll start getting a "full bar" of signal no matter what direction you aim the
antenna. You'll need to change to the offset channel (fox number plus 6) and turn on the offset attenuator.
Turn the dial to adjust the signal strength so you can see a change when pointing the antenna around.

Below are pictures of the test beacons, a fox box, and an example of how well hidden the fox boxes can be.
