back to foxhunting

11m (CB) foxhunt (aka Cat and Mouse) 11m (CB) foxhunt (aka Cat and Mouse):

Back in the 80's and 90's 'cat and mouse' was popular around here, the CB version of fox-hunting. We played
differently though, hunting for vehicles instead of boxes. Looking for new challenges, we built a radio that
was controlled by a timer and a voice playback, and set it out for others to find and re-hide.

Although directional antennas weren't allowed in cat and mouse games, these 'hidden transmitter' hunts had no
such limitations, and 'anything goes' for finding the transmitter. So we had to come up with portable radios
(since these would usually be in the woods somewhere, not closely accessible by car) and we also could use
some way to get a directional bearing. A three element beam for 11m wouldn't be portable either, so people
just started randomly playing with hand-held loops to see if they could come up with something directional.

You might scoff at the skills of a CB fox-hunter, but the talent was real, and the games were challenging.
Our Cat and Mouse group had several skilled players that could find a vehicle anywhere in the city, at night,
despite being heavily camouflaged, using only omni-directional antennas and their experience with the radio
characteristics of their antenna and radio, in as little as 20 minutes. Oh, and I had an 11m DOPPLER that
I built from scratch and mounted on my truck.
