back to EMI hunting
MFJ-856 directional noise finder
MFJ-856 directional noise finder:
I think I picked this up at a hamfest. It's a directional meter made by MFJ, for identifying EMI generated by
things like power lines, transformers, bad insulators, lighting, etc. These were pretty expensive for what you
get for material, and it's the only one I've ever seen. None appear on eBay for sale or completed either, so
I'm assuming they were not good sellers and are very rare. But I don't think anything else was ever marketed
to consumers for hunting down EMI.
I don't think MFJ sold them for very long, and MFJ isn't selling radio gear anymore so these are unobtainable.
Product description:
Walk or drive around with this handheld, directional noise finder with 3 element beam and meter to search out
foxes, leaky insulators, loose hardware and corroded ground lines quickly. Track the noise source right down
to the pole, transformer, or insulator, or other source. Operates in the 135MHz region where activity is a
minimum and radiation from corona and arcing is far more localized. 0.3 uV sensitivity and wide-range AGC for
noise level meter.
