polycrystalline
polycrystalline:
Older panels are "polycrystalline", meaning they're made from silicon that was cooled rapidly and has crystalized
starting at many different locations, that all grow outward and merge. It gives the panels a pretty distinctive
"kaleidoscope" appearance, as the different patches of silicon are at different angles and reflect light in
various directions.
These panels are less efficient than modern "monocrystalline" panels, and should be avoided unless they're sold
at a substantial discount and you have the space to lay out additional panels for the same amount of power that
you'd get from newer panels.
