usb solder
usb solder:
I carry a Weller PyroPen (butane soldering iron) in my electronics bag for emergency soldering work, but when I
was at Field Day in Clear Lake recently someone was using a soldering iron powered by a USB battery bank. I'd
never seen something like that, but when I looked online there were several variations for sale and they looked
pretty popular. I ended up getting this one, along with a spare set of tips.
This soldering iron has a digital display and temperature control, is powered by USB-C, and has interchangeable
soldering tips that include their own heaters. The package I got also included a 65w USB power brick like you'd
use to charge a cell phone or tablet, although it also came with a barrel adapter that allows you to power it from
any external DC power source 12-36v, as well as a very flexible USB-C cable to hook to the iron.
The current listing has changed the included adapter to one that only has USB-C. If you want to run the iron at
higher than 65w you'll need to use the barrel adapter and connect it to a larger power source. This is fine for
me since we have plenty of high current 12v power available at Field Day.
