Meters are technically "optional", but are a really good idea to have. They'll let you know the state of
your batteries, how much current your equipment is drawing and panels are providing, and can keep a running
total of the amount of energy your solar has provided or radios have used over the course of an event.

I personally find great satisfaction in seeing big numbers in "watt-hours of solar energy collected".
