heat shrinking connectors
heat shrinking connectors:
I've started adding heat shrink on my PP housings. It makes the connectors more comfortable to handle, adds
a little bit of strain relief on the wires, helps keep the housings connected together, and keeps the drift
pin from working loose.
I get the tubing with glue in it, and that helps provide a bit more strain relief and prevents it from sliding
off the connector with use.
For the larger wire (#8 and #10) I use 3/4" heat shrink tubing. For smaller wire (like #14-#18) I go with the
slightly smaller 5/8" tubing. It's a tight fit over the connector, but provides a better grip on the wire.
I've found I can just cut the tubing into squares for a good fit for either size. I keep a handful of each
in my powerpole box for use when assembling cables or adding connectors, and use a hot-air rework nozzle
(set to 250 F) to neatly shrink the tubing.
