SunZone AA work light
SunZone AA work light:
I picked up a single 4xAA version of this light on a whim at Menards and found it worked well but wanted to
convert it to rechargeable since it ran through AAs pretty fast. (it's a bright light) The board inside isn't
going to accept lithium unfortunately.
The light identical to the branded one on Amazon so I'm assuming they did a limited unbranded run for Menards
to sell (under their WorkForce label) for product testing. It must have been a hit, so they went with their
SunForce label and are selling both the 4xAA and the rechargeable (with powerbank) varieties on Amazon now,
although they're only being sold in pairs now.
They're selling them two at a time now at Menards at two for $8. That's a pretty insanely low price compared
to Amazon, and I thought maybe they were just closing out inventory before discontinuing, but Menards says they
have over 4,000 available with over 60 at my store alone. It's a shame they blow through batteries so fast.
I may get another pair to keep in the vehicles. They're not especially useful at home with their battery use,
but it's good to keep in the vehicle for emergency lighting, specifically with an unopened pack of AAs, since
they'll always be fully charged and can be replaced in-the-field without needing to be recharged, which isn't
always convenient or even an option in-the-field.
One final advantage these lights have is that the battery compartment is clear, so you don't even need to open
it up to check on the batteries. (Duracell has already managed to start leaking in mine once!) And strangely,
they're marketed as "waterproof" (with no IP rating) and do seem to have a waterproof button and even a full
gasket around the battery compartment, but when I opened it up to see about modding for a pair of 14500's, I
found that the housing halves did not have a gasket between them, so this light can't tolerate any time under
water it would seem. I'd give them an IP64, where they could get an IP67 with a housing gasket.
AA current draw is 490mA at low lower, and 1.44A at high power. (about triple the power draw for high vs low)
Typical capacity for alkaline AA batteries ranges between 1,800-3,000mAh (each). Since the batteries are in
series, we don't need to modify that number when calculating runtime.
Anticipated runtime is 220-370 min (2h40m-6h) at low power, or 75-125 min (1hr15m-2h) at high power.
