back to UPS

APC Smart UPS-2000 APC Smart UPS-2000:

I picked up this UPS from the e-waste bin at work. It's a large, older model that runs on a single large 24v
internal battery. This one was working fine but needed a new battery. This model ships with the battery cutoff
plug removed so it can't turn on during shipping. This is an SB-50 connector on the back of the case, and in
the box you get another loose SB-50 with a jumper around it. Plugging this in connects the internal battery.

I removed the dead (24v) battery, which connects inside using the same SB-50 connector, and then plugged in
the jumper inside. This made the external connector the new battery port. I purchased a pair of 12v deep-cycle
marine batteries, connected them in series, and ran a jumper cable from them to the SB-50 on the back of the
UPS. So now it has a rather obscene runtime, probably measured in days.

There is a chance that it will overheat after operating many hours on battery, or that the battery charge circuit
will overheat after running for too long to recharge the batteries after an extended outage. But I'll deal with
that when the time comes.
