3 grab-and-go LiFePO4 battery
3 grab-and-go LiFePO4 battery:
I intended to put my large (100AH) LiFePO4 battery into a standard group-24 box, but the lithium battery was
just a little taller and a little wider than the FLA that was in it already, and I found it lacked the space
that I'd normally get from a box. So I got to thinking of other ways to make this battery portable.
For this setup I wanted USB power, a power-pole block, a voltage indicator, and at least one SB-50 connector,
along with a fuse. Despite its size, this lithium battery is only about 1/3 the weight of the FLA, AND it has
a carrying strap on it, so I thought, "Why don't I just make the battery the box?" Looking closer at the
battery, I realized I could just attach the USB, the distro block, AND the fuse directly to the battery, and
suddenly it turned from a battery box to a grab-and-go battery, no box needed.
I used hot glue to attach the USB, the distro, and the fuse to the top of the battery. The output ports on the
block needed to be right at an edge since some powerpoles use a dust cover for a strain relief and they would
be blocked if I didn't let them overhang. The block had a voltmeter in it, so that also was on an outside
edge, so I knew exactly where it had to go. That limited the USB block to basically one spot too. I put the
fuse in the middle, and ran the wires so the two power-pole ends ended in the only other open space, making it
a very tidy build. I used velcro to attach the SB-50 to the battery top, and a little more velcro to attach the
PP-45 to the SB-50. And with that, the grab-and-go was done. 100AH in 25 lbs, WOW!
