back to 2025.10.18 Duracell AA leak in Mk.4
3 repair
3 repair:
One AA leaked, but when it did it swelled up and broke the end off the AA holder. Fortunately, it doesn't
appear to have done any damage to the circuit board. Unfortunately, that holder is essentially impossible
to remove because it's superglued to the circuit board below it.
After some discussions with the creator Brian (VK3YNG) we've determined that the best course of action is to
clean up the leak (already done), and to reinstall the holder's end, bracing it against the case. I've decided
to use hot-melt-glue to both hold the end in place and provide support / fill the gap.
It looks like I got by pretty lucky. Brian has had numerous units returned to him (in Australia) to clean
up the mess from leaky batteries, and most of them have suffered from corroded circuit boards, which are a lot
more work to repair, and not something I could have done on my own. (the decision to superglue down the battery
holder seriously complicates the repair, but space is pretty tight in there)
