This may be old news to many of you, but hey, I think it's a slick idea! I needed a decent gun case for my Vector and Trracer, (yes quite the combo, eh? at least they match...) and I set out to get the most for the least. Buying one was out of the question, as that would involve quite an investment for one that would carry all three barrels, both guns, and a plug without them banging into eachother. My solution was partly inspired by another player I saw a few weeks ago. He had his VM-68 sitting in a roller-skate case, wrapped in a towel I think. (he also had his mask in there in another towel) I think to myself, "hey I got one of those up in the clothset!" Now of course wrapping it in a towel was NOT my style. I wanted something that would not bang around. Needed some kind of foam, maybe like that egg stuff in the real gun cases, but that would sure waste a lot of the depth of the case, plus things can still slide around. (the Vector is quite heavy) Solution: carpet padding! I went out to the local warehouse hardware store and picked up about 2 yards of 1 yard wide carpet padding. (the GOOD stuff, not the 'el cheapo porous stuff) BTW, the price difference was 3:1 for the good stuff, but it had this wild orange and white swirl pattern that caught my eye, and did not look like it would compress like the other garbage. Anyway, I carefully drew out and cut 16 sheets just the size of the case and started to cutting with a razorblade. (padding is only 1/2" thick) I made sure to lay out where everything was going to go in advance of doing any cuts. Trracer and its stock barrel in the bottom, (with one blank sheet below it) Vector alone on top, and 14" TF and Vector's barrel in the lid. (yep! in the LID) Anyway, best method seemed to be to trace out the section that was going to be in the middle of the gun, and work down and up from there, using the first cut sheet as a template. (of course not all the area needs to be cut out as you get farther away from the gun's center, like where the trigger is) After the smoke cleared, I dropped the first five sheets in, and plopped in the trracer and its barrel. Laid down the next six or so sheets and laid in the Vector. Put the sheets and barrel in the lid and closed it up. Oops! the sheets didn't hold in place! Got out some rubber cement and thought I had it licked. Nopers. Nothing seems to stick to carpet padding. Owell. The case has to be opened on it's back, tilting the lid and bottom down as it's opened. The case holds all the stuff like a glove, and NOTHING shakes, rattles, or shifts. The orange swirl also looks awesome. Reminds me of fuzzy dice for some reason..... At least now I don't have any worries about getting my guns banged up in my dufflebag. BTW, the tanks are NOT in the case. (not enough room) No biggie. Note that I have to lift out the Vector (and then five slabs of padding) to get the Trracer out, but hey, I doubt I'll be going for the Trracer FIRST anyway... ;-) Thinking back on it, I suppose I could have set the guns in upright, but that would not be as neat. oh maybe not -- the barrels wouldn't fit! owell, I like it just the way it is, and I still have a few empty spots I can cut out later.
