magnetic film magnetic film:

I've always been interested in magnets, so when I found some 'magnetic film' online that could be used to
'see' magnetic flux, I had to have some. It was effective, but a bit disappointing. The film was limited
in how it interpreted the flux, only darkening where it was stronger. It was a bit like watching TV, but it
was a black-and-white TV. It also didn't 'self-reset', so if you dragged it across a magnet it would leave
a 'ghost' of the pattern. It was easy to scuff it so I had to be careful with it, and not crease it either.
It could be cut into smaller pieces with a scissors though.

I recently ran into a new kind of film, that looked like it would work much better. It displayed varying
colors depending on the strength of the flux, looking a lot like those fish tank thermometer strips you use
to tell how warm the water is. It was also self-resetting, which really helped. I basically have no use
for the old film, this stuff is awesome. It's also a bit more expensive than the old kind. It was also
laminated when I got it. The instructions said one side was open in case you wanted to remove it to wrap
around something, but I found mine was sealed all the way around. I'd rather it be that way anyway, to
protect it. It also said you could cut it but should "heat seal" the edges to preserve it.

Both films have to be placed very close to the magnet in question, usually laying right on them for the
best view. The chart it came with shows it can indicate 50-1000 gauss. I asked if it could be damaged by
a strong magnet and was told that it wouldn't be damaged by strong magnets. It seems to be fine with my
large N52. I saw people asking if it would show radio waves or power wires, and it does not. It would
probably show a DC power wire that was passing strong current though. My laminated card was slightly
curled so I had to hold it down against flat objects sometimes to get the best view.
