2015 American $5 gold Eagle
2015 American $5 gold Eagle:
Purchased on 12/6/2016 for $139
This coin is alloyed for circulation, and has a distinctively brassy color to it, due to the copper/silver
mixed in with the gold. Alloy: Gold (.917), Silver (.030), Copper (.053) It's very close in size to a US dime.
I don't know why they do this - it's got a face-value of $5 and its melt value is over $250. Coins like this
are clearly never going to be circulated as currency. Maybe they just wanted to make a more "durable"
bullion modern coin? Or some tradition of keeping this specific coin in print. (it's been minted every year
since 1986) Or maybe they're just doing it because they can?
