back to ropes

avoiding rope tangling during storage avoiding rope tangling during storage:

Rope bags are a good way to go but are a high-end solution for longer ropes. I use a rope bag for my 300'
static line, you do NOT want to have to untangle that. For the smaller ropes, a basic around-the-elbow-and-hand
wind is used. keep loop sizes consistent. DON'T twist the line as you coil it, and the coil will naturally
adopt a figure-8 shape as you wind it, you'll see it flip over when you take it off your arm. At the end, very
important, wind 8-10 turns around the coil and then THROUGH one of the loop ends of the coil before securing
the end. This prevents individual loops in the coil from "turning over" in storage/transport. When uncoiling,
put your arm through the loop where the through end was and unwind one turn at a time. you'll never get a tangle.

More recently I've changed strategy for storage inside my rope duffle bags. I just "flake" the rope into the
bag using a consistent over-the-head method of piling the rope in very evenly and consistently. So far this
has been completely effective in preventing tangles when feeding out ropes or even dropping bags.
