back to ascender foot rope knot
mutli-colored example
mutli-colored example:
I've obtained variety of different colors of rope to help demonstrate knots, and took a few additional
pictures of this ascender foot-strap knot.
The blue lead is the feed-through, and the red/green are the ends of the rope that terminate in the knot.
Pictured are two different ways to dress the fisherman's knot. The top one is the traditional way, which
forms an "X" on the side and sends the end leads away in parallel to the thru and loop leads. This causes
the three ropes out the ends to arrange themselves in a "triangle" arrangement, which allows the thru-rope
to rub on the end tail, and might make it more prone to self-loosening. Also, when the foot loop is snugged
up, the tail will be pressing on your shoe, and may again lead to self-loosening.
The lower picture shows the fisherman's knots re-dressed, by tucking one of the two loops under the other.
This produces two important changes in the knot's performance. First, the three leads that leave the
rope form up in a row, and you can dress them to place the thru and the tail ropes separated by the feeder
from the other side, preventing loosening of the tail when adjusting the tightness of the foot loop. Second,
the tail exits at an angle, preventing it from poking at your shoe and possibly getting pushed into the knot
and loosening it.
