N0ZYC's checklist for setting up and taking down a Gin Pole:
version 2022.05.24.A


need a lower pulley for lift bag
and put UP or PULLEY on bracket

assumes toolbag rope is installed, along with lower and upper toolbag pulleys

prepare gin pole:

1. slide bracket onto top of gin pole (pole clamp on BOTTOM)
2. run lift rope through lower pulley
3. slide cup onto lift rope
4. feed lift rope up pole and out over gin pole pulley
5. pull lift rope out top, DO NOT loop around gin pole pulley
6. tie figure-8 onto end of lift rope
7. slide cup onto gin pole
8. duct tape cup to pole (orient eyebolts parallel to pulley shaft)
9. chain bottom pulley to base of tower
10. get out ascenders for ground crew

prepare to raise gin pole:

1. attach top lift pulley to top of tower, as high as possible
2. raise lift rope using toolbox rope
3. remve figure 8 and run lift rope through top lift pulley, re-tie figure 8
4. drop lift rope down to ground crew

raise gin pole:

1. ground crew position gin pole ready for lifting
2. ground crew tie stopper square knot in lift rope just as it exits cup
3. ground crew lift gin pole slowly (using ascenders), using cup end of lift rope for tag line
4. once clamp has reached top, attach clamp to tower (USE BEST LEG)
5. put stopper square knot in lift rope just above gin pole
6. pull rope up and out of top pulley, thread around gin pole pulley, and let down to ground crew
7. remove stopper knot at pulley

extend gin pole:

1. release gin pole from clamp
2. twist gin pole so pulley faces tower
3. secure toolbag and bring down end of toolbox rope to cup
4. attach toolbox rope to cup
5. untie stopper knot at cup
6. climb back up to clamp
7. have ground crew slowly extend gin pole (using ascenders)
8. clip cup to tower
9. have ground crew let up on toolbag rope to transfer pole weight to cup and tower
10. verify pulley and cup orientation, twist if needed
11. grab gin pole with clamp
12. detach toolbag rope from cup and reattach to toolbag

[ raising and lowering with the gin pole is pretty straight-forward ]

retract gin pole:

1. secure toolbag and attach toolbox rope to cup
2. make sure ground crew has adequate lift rope on cup end
3. tie stopper square knot in lift rope just below cup
4. prepare ground crew to take weight of gin pole on toolbag rope (use ascenders)
5. release gin pole from clamp
6. have ground crew slowly lower gin pole until pulley is an inch from clamp - control gin pole from BELOW clamp (pinch hazard on top!)
7. grab gin pole with clamp

lower gin pole:

1. detach toolbag rope  from cup and reattach to toolbag
2. prepare ground crew to take weight of gin pole on lift rope (use ascenders)
3. detach clamp from tower
4. guide clamp free of tower as ground crew lift away from tower and hold there
5. secure clamp's tower locks
6. have ground crew lower gin pole, using cup end of lift rope for tag line



I've gone over this list a few times and it's probably MOSTLY correct now

So forgetting or getting any of those 40+ steps out of order will require backtracking.
