Jumar ascenders Jumar ascenders:

My mother bought these for me as a birthday gift when I was in my early teens, and they played a pretty major
part in maintaining and accelerating my interest in climbing. They're a little "boxy" by today's ascender
standards, but they're strong (working load limit is 5KN) and have done an excellent job of protecting my
ropes while I use them. She also bought me a waist harness, which I have LONG since outgrown. I think I may
still have the carabiner that came with it - it was a screw-lock type. I was on my own finding climbing rope
though, so several of my early ropes were bought by-the-foot at the local hardware store.

The Jumar brand was acquired at some point by Petzl. They make nice curved ascenders now with rubber grips,
but my hands are permanently paired to these I think, so I'm not planning on replacing them anytime soon.

Just look at all the yellow paint they slathered on them to protect them. Mine have a few very small dings
on them at this point, but not a spec of rust or corrosion. I suspect if I "snap release" the blue or red
retainers I risk shattering the old plastic on them, so I do try to treat them gently.
