He's seen dressed in a plain brown cloak with hood down. Wearing dusty boots and no apparent armor or decorations other than a small silver ring on the left hand, he is easily mistaken for a simple acolyte. (a symbol of faith on a necklace might be spotted worn across his neck, always worn under his cloak) Almost always seen wearing specticles. A smallish dark tan pack is slung over his left shoulder, the pack held between his arm and waist. Unkept hair and callous hands slant his appearance more toward a man of the field than of the cloth. Despite the commonor appearance, an unusual aura seems to surround Antos... his movements are deliberate and fluid, quick but not rushed. Losing eye contact with him for even a moment may lose him in a crowd, yet he may walk by as though silence itself accompanied him, making neigh a sound as he passes. Usually walking with hands conceiled inside his cloak, only Antos's head and neck are clearly visible, though there is something not exactly normal about his looks. He looks perfectly human, but of a race that's not quite apparent. Observed, combat: Brother Antos does not normally seek confrontation, but will come to the aid of those in need. His entrance into a fray is usually quite sudden, the first blows being landed without a sound as he seemingly arrives from nowhere. Antos prefers hand-to-hand combat, but can meet more dangerous challenges with a well-worn set of nunchucks which he keeps concealed inside his cloak. In mild skirmishes, it's rare to see a blow landed on Antos, as he fluidly dodges, sidesteps, and tumbles to avoid all but the most skilled attacks. Several opponents attacking at once finds several of them reeling to the ground as Antos sweeps one off his feet as he moves to deal with another. Lethal force would not be seen on any public occasion. It would be common to see Antos simply stop fighting after knocking an assailant to the ground, expecting the attacker to realize his position, give up, and leave. Although perhaps overly-confident in the honor of others, an assailant that got up to attack Antos from behind as he walked away would likely find a boot landing square on his chest before reaching striking range. Contact: The start of your conversation with Antos might lead you to believe he is not a very talkative person, or is perhaps distracted by something else going on in another world. If you are of an intimidating disposition, Brother Antos would react with further dis-interest in you, perhaps with a small amount of spite in his words, which would be few, carefully chosen, direct, and at the same time, thought-provoking. You would be most likely to get a more lively response if you were appealing for his assistance, or if something about you or your party interested him. Authority figures would go largely ignored, as Antos knows who the final authority is, and you're definitely not it. He would not provoke such an authority figure, but would not show any respect for their authority. Authority figures who demonstrate that their "authority" is rightfully deserved or earned would be shown a degree of respect. Antos is quiet and withdrawn, and his roll in most conversations is that of the listener, as he does not often ask questions, and when asked gives only short, concise answers. In that respect he is "a man of few words", and most often speaks to give small "deep" pearls of wisdom to the listener. His communications do not give a strong feel of intelligence, but instead they radiate a powerful aire of wisdom. Dichotomy: Once a person has seen Brother Antos in combat and in any other form, a feeling of two separate people immediately develops. At most times, he seems to be careful, pensive, calm, quiet, withdrawn. But in battle, a completely different side of him emerges, as Antos demonstrates great agility, nimbleness, deftness, and a quickness beyond description. There is no easy way seen to reason out how two so completely different people exist in the same form. Party Interaction: Brother Antos does not have a freely-given respect for authority. He understands and embraces law and order, and knows the value of leadership in a group, but it's not a role he would assume under any but the most dire of circumstances. Group leaders would be respected as such for as long as they showed competent leader behavior. Incompetent leaders would be treated with obvious (but not insulting) disrespect. Violence for the sake of violence is detested, as is also the abuse of neutral animals. Under the right circumstances, Antos's treatment of animals may be seen to be greater than his treatment of select people. (such as those who sought to harm the animal in question) In this respect his behavior is somewhat akin to a druid's affinity to animals. Antos's interaction with thieves would be rocky at best, and he would probably not willingly join a party that included an assassin, antipaladin, or other character devoted to evil unless there was a much greater good involved or was ordered to do so by a higher priestly official. On Closer Inspection: When Antos removes his cloak, or at other possible times, he could be seen to be wearing a set of battered silver bracers and simple monk's clothes underneath his cloak. A symbol of his faith hangs about his neck, and is noteworthy in that it's the only piece of his equipment that is not unkept - in fact it's polished to a high shine and appears to be of very fine craftsmanship. (and is never removed) The symbol is a pair of hands clasped in prayer, wrapped once with a cord. Antos wears a tarnished silver ring on the left hand, both of his hands being heavily calloused, scarred, and rough from years of use in unarmed combat. By the callusing on his fingers and the fit of the ring, one might realize it has been on his hand for many years and may be difficult or impossible for him to remove. When seen opening his pack, it would usually be to obtain a piece of parchment and ink/pen to do writing with, but no extraordinary items would be noticed in the pack, and little or no clink of coin heard. Antos may be seen to light incense or a candle on occasion when meditating or writing. His cloak, although rough on outward appearance, is seen to have a fine grey silk inner lining, giving a hint that it may be a finer garment than its outward appearance suggests. An ornately carved set of ivory nunchucks is kept tucked in a small leather pouch attached to his belt on the right side, although they're not seen except during combat, and then only when maximum force is called for. A belt holding several small vials is attached to the left side of his belt. Signature Techniques ¥ÊThe Balcony Snatch: If being attacked by a ranged attacker up on a balcony or sniper ledge, Antos will Dodge on the sniper, jump up on the balcony, grapple the sniper, and then pull the two of them off the edge. The enemy not only gets dragged into melee range of the rest of my party, but as an additional insult, he takes falling damage too. (which Antos most likely will not) ¥ÊThe Drive-By: Uses Spring Attack to move 50 ft, attack (with nunchucks), and retreat 50 ft. No attack of opportunity is presented to the target during this maneuver. if crossing through a threatened area of another hostile, declare Dodge on hostile for a total of +5 AC on opportunity attacks from that hostile. (and +4 AC on other hostiles) ¥ÊThe Holy Lockpick: If a locked device is encountered, is absolutely necessary to be removed, and no thief or similar skill is present, (such as someone with Knock) Antos may take out his Chime of Opening, light a candle or incense, recite a short prayer, and finally ring the chime to unlock the device. Antos knows that the Chime is merely a magical item capable of opening locks, but since he received it from a respected mentor (as a reward for performing a quest) he prefers to look at it as more of a spiritual object and will act/perform as though it's a "holy chime of passage" and that the ritual he performs around its use is a part of the "magic" of its use. When rung, the chime is held by its short leather strap, which also has a small ivory token on it inscribed with his symbol of faith. Antos typically rings the chime with a tap from his nunchucks. Specific Behaviors (for the DM to note for fill-in rollplay) ¥ÊBrother Antos's personality is loosely(?) based on Kane from the TV show "Kung Fu Theatre". A nondescript priest, quiet, mystical. I've selected stats, feats, skills, and equipment to foster this character image. Some things are a departure from this image, but only to compensate for other areas which are more lacking. (I can't see Kane using nunchucks, but a monk's unarmed fighting won't match them until lvl 8, and I can't otherwise hit mondane-resistant mobs) ¥ Antos does not invoke his Boots of Striding or his exceptional speed abilities except when he feels they are necessary. To do so would be to "show off". He would also prefer to give his faith the credit for all his abilities, even though he knows that some of his equipment is magical and is wholely responsible for the effects they produce. If asked about his extraordinary abilities, he will probably insinuate that it's the power of his faith that lets him do what he does. (similar to the Holy Lockpick, above) As such, he may appear to someone familiar with monks as a lower level monk than he actually is. Only a careful learned observer would be able to accurately guess his level of ability. ¥ÊHe has an affinity for animals, and they too benefit from his wish to help others in need. He does not actively seek out animals (or people) to help, but will help either if the opportunity presents itself. This would include comforting the suffering, and persuading others to treat them better if they are being ill-treated. This behavior has been known to insult those who do not share his respect of animalkind. ¥ÊAntos practices humility; he does not spend time with matters of self and is not well-groomed. "Unpolished" would sum him up nicely. His clothes do not give any indication of his level or position. The only exception is his Amulet of Wisdom, which was crafted in the symbol of his faith, which he keeps highly polished at all times. This is not a matter of pride, but one of reverence. This is also the one piece of equipment that he holds great personal value in, which he will not part with at any time, and is not openly displayed. Others who possess a symbol of his faith are initially treated with respect and trust, although their behavior can adjust this reaction quickly. ¥ÊAntos meditates by sitting in quiet contemplation, possibly accompanied by a burning candle, incense, or both, or by playing his wooden flute. He's also proficient in making a simple wooden flute to replace his if it is damaged or lost. If meditating indoors, he will likely be sitting quietly alone, and may cease his meditation if his solitude is broken. If an outdoor area is available, he will seek seclusion to play his flute. (although having an audience arrive and listen to him play does not bother him) Antos does not normally play his flute to perform, while traveling, or on any other occasions, but may do so on personal request. ¥ÊAlthough Antos's alignment is LG, and his behavior is strongly good, it is not strongly lawful. This is most obviously demonstrated in his lack of respect for authority. He will follow the laws for the most part, but if a corrupt official has made oppression by law Antos may appear to behave in a more neutral way in defense of the innocent. Basically, when lawful and good come in conflict, good has the edge. Brother Antos's irrelevance to authority does not extend to priestly figures, which he grants (almost) unquestioned authority, obedience, and respect to. ¥ Antos does not regard constructs as having a soul or being truly alive, and will regard them merely as a dangerous object. He will always favor acting in the best interest of living creatures before constructs, and may even be irrelevant to the construct being harmed, or at least to regard it as no more than property being damaged.
