Ultima:


Ultima IV and V made extensive use of runes in the game. They weren't just for show, players needed to be
able to translate signs, messages from NPCs, and other items to acquire information necessary to finishing the
game. This game dates back to an era where games came in boxes and included "trinkets", physical items that
helped emerse the player in the game. Ultima games came with a cloth map of the world, with key areas named in
runes, and a "book of lore" that included things like spell components and a key to the runic alphabet.

After some time in the game, most players will have memorized the alphabet to the point of not needing to open
the guide to translate the texts hidden in runic.
