2025.12.07 Duracell AAA leak in thermomiter
2025.12.07 Duracell AAA leak in thermomiter:
While tidying up the bathroom I gave the thermometer a squeeze and... nothing. Must need new batteries?
Can't get the hatch open, where's a screwdriver? Oh, so that's why the hatch won't open!
This one wins my prize for "nastiest corrosion on a battery hatch". The crust was brown and thick, looked
like it had spent a few seasons out in the rain. And when I hit it with citric acid, a single drop set it
off like a science volcano. (usually they fizz a lot less, more like alka seltzer) So after about five drops
of citric, it foamed like mad for only 10 seconds and then was done. Wiped it off, exposing grey steel. Gave
it a quick water wash and dry and looks okay.
Despite the other end of the batteries looking equally bad, the springs were virtually untouched, and required
almost no cleaning.
1 thermomiter
2 hatch pried open
3 leaky cells one end
3 leaky cells other end
4 nasty hatch
5 springs almost untouched
