300w 0.73 ohm power resistors
300w 0.73 ohm power resistors:
I'm collecting some large power resistors to use either for solar heating or load testing. These are 300 watt,
0.73 ohm power resistors used for load-dumping in wind generation. They'll draw about 16 amps at 12v, just
under 200 watts. They'll hit 300 watts at 14.8 volts (20 amps) I bought six of them in Jan 2023 on eBay, but
I see they're still available new for pretty cheap at Missouri Wind and Solar.
When the batteries are full in a wind turbine, the turbine stops resisting the turn of the blades, and they can
spin dangerously fast in high wind. So when demand exceeds load, the controller will cut in big dump resistors
like these to safely dissipate the excess power and protect the blades and turbine. These are obviously meant
to have their supply wires bolted to the terminals, not soldered.
These are the TUKECO model of ceramic power resistors (made by Tatsu) and come in 12, 24, 36, and 48 volt
varieties, and can be switched directly inline to draw 200 watts (2/3 of their rated max power) at the specified
voltage. I think Tatsu UK has gone out of business but I really like the look of their Prussian blue resistors.
