ladder hooks
ladder hooks:
Ladder hooks (aka "recovery hooks", "rebar hooks", or "scaffold hooks") are auto-locking carabiners with a
large swing gate that opens 3 inches to securely connect to large attachment points. Most of the hooks you
see are heavy and made of steel, but there are lighter versions available too.
Their primary uses are for a climber to connect their safety lanyard or positioning straps to a structure, or
by rescue personnel to connect to the rescue ring on the back of a victim's safety harness.
These types of hooks are especially useful for tower work where you often need to tether yourself to something
that's too wide for a standard size carabiner on something like a quickdraw. These are often called "ladder
hooks" because they're used by firemen that are up on a ladder truck's ladder, so they don't fall off or get
knocked off or pushed by hose water pressure, and they need to be able to connect to the ladder at any height,
so they're connecting to the ladder rungs, which are far too wide to connect a standard carabiner to.
I also use them on the end of my heavy lift ropes. These large hooks are great for connecting to big gear like
tower sections - no need to tie onto them, just clip and go.
