People started arriving around 10am Saturday morning to begin setup. Scattered showers and light wind were
forecast for the day, and a short but somewhat intense shower was just rolling through when I arrived. Dick
(W0HHF) directed us to the North end of his property to set up in a large open field between the pasture to
the East and horse ring to the SouthWest.
Normally I'd just pick a corner somewhere, lay out my power, and run it to wherever people had set up. But for
this event, I decided to just park my truck in the middle of the field and throw up a "staging canopy" right next
to my truck, for easy unloading. We had only a brief window to get my canopy set up between the morning
showers, and this gave us a dry spot to hang out and work out the details of setup while we waited for the next
opportunity to step out and get to work. We hadn't really planned station and antenna layout in advance, so
we just ended up setting up canopies in a semicircle around the staging canopy.
Thankfully the rain stopped for just long enough for us to get my "staging" canopy set up. While waiting for
the shower to move through, we took the time discuss station setup and general operations. Both Dave (KD0DK)
and Al (KB0VGG) were suffering with recent illness, though both of them were able to make it and help with the
event. We had a good size turnout (larger than I was expecting) and were able to jump right into setup as soon
as the rain let up. Several canopies and one tent formed a ring around the staging area, and we had enough
canopies, tables, and chairs to go around.
I gradually unloaded power, solar, and other support equipment as other groups got to work assembling canopies
and radios. This central canopy turned into the default mustering point for the setup, and worked out pretty
well. Even though it was the largest canopy (12x12ft) it still got a little cramped, but not too bad. Having
my truck mere feet away really helped with unloading and setup, since I didn't even need to take a few of the
less-used totes out of the truck right away.
Mark (N8TWO) got out a roll of Caution Tape which was used to mark the power wires that radiated out from the
central canopy to reduce the trip hazard.
